AB 1018 – AI & Hiring

A new bill introduced in the 2025 legislative session—AB 1018—could be a game-changer for how employers use artificial intelligence in hiring, promotions, scheduling, and more.

If passed, AB 1018 would:

📣 Require transparency and human review in AI-driven employment decisions

📣Mandate audits, impact assessments, and detailed documentation from employers and AI developers

📣Expand the definition of “consequential decisions” to include wages, benefits, training access, and workplace safety

📣Impose strict data retention rules and designate compliance officers within companies

📣Penalize violations with fines up to $25k

This bill aims to protect workers from algorithmic discrimination—and would place CA at the forefront of regulating workplace AI.

The bill is still moving through the legislature and could reach the Governor’s desk by September 12, 2025, with a signature or veto deadline of October 12, 2025.

Whether or not it passes this session, AB 1018 signals what’s coming next in AI oversight—and employers should start preparing now.

Stay tuned as we break down more bills that could reshape the workplace in 2025.
