California is making strides toward greater pay equity with Senate Bill 642, which is being considered during the 2025 legislative session. This bill seeks to refine the state’s pay transparency laws by requiring employers to provide more accurate and realistic salary ranges in job postings.
Key provisions of SB 642 include:
✔️ Better protections for transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming workers by revising outdated gender binary language in the law.
✔️ Salary ranges in job postings must be within 10% of the mean pay rate for that role.
✔️ Expanding the definition of “wages” to include stock options and other benefits.
✔️ Extending the statute of limitations for wage claims, allowing more time for employees to challenge pay discrimination.
While SB 642 has not passed yet, it holds the potential to strengthen CA’s Equal Pay Act and promote fairness in pay transparency. If this bill becomes law, it will have significant impacts on both employers and employees across the state.
Stay tuned, as the legislative session runs until September 12, 2025, with the governor having until October 12, 2025, to sign or veto the bill.
This is a critical moment for ensuring fair pay practices, and we’ll be keeping an eye on this bill’s progress!
