Trump’s Attack on Law Firms

Trump’s latest executive orders targeting law firms are a direct attack on the legal profession, due process, and the constitutional rights of all Americans.

In an unprecedented move, Trump issued executive orders revoking security clearances and targeting government contracts of two major law firms—Perkins Coie and Covington & Burling—because they represented clients who have opposed him. These firms have worked on cases involving Hillary Clinton’s campaign and Special Counsel Jack Smith, who brought federal charges against Trump.

The ability to represent clients—regardless of political affiliation—is fundamental to our democracy. Retaliating against law firms for doing their job undermines the rule of law and sets a dangerous precedent.

While these firms represent our opponents in cases, we disagree with the retaliatory nature of these orders. The law should not serve as a tool for political retribution.
